When Mavis (Michelle Buteau) discovers her boyfriend of five years has been unfaithful, what stings almost as much as the betrayal is the narrative she imagines surrounding it. “If someone cheats on Halle Berry, they’re like, ‘Oh my God, how that man cheat on Halle Berry?'” she laments. “But if someone cheats on someone like me, a thick girl with problem areas? They’re like, ‘Oh yeah, I get it.'”
And though her best friend, Khalil (Tone Bell), gently pushes back on that “silly-ass narrative,” Mavis isn’t entirely wrong: Plus-sized women, and indeed all those who fall outside the straight-cis-white-skinny box, do tend to go ignored or sidelined or disrespected in love stories. Netflix’s Survival of the Thickest is a welcome and too-rare exception — a comedy that puts Mavis front and center as a worthy heroine, with mostly enjoyable results.

There’s a scene in the third episode of I May Destroy You, Michaela Coel’s dizzying exploration of sex and consent, where Arabella (played by Coel) is fooling around with Biaggio (Marouane Zotti), a ne’er-do-well Italian drug dealer. Just before they’re about to hook up, she warns him that she’s on her period, but he’s unfazed. He takes out her tampon and sets it aside… at which point his attention turns to a clump of blood on the bedspread. “What’s that?” he asks her,...

This column contains full spoilers for HBO’s I May Destroy You, which aired its finale on Monday night.
The very first shot of I May Destroy You occurs, like much of Michaela Coel’s incredible HBO limited series, outside the boundaries of time, and possibly reality. We are in a small, cluttered bedroom, the bedspread filled with notepads, pens, and scraps of paper, the walls covered with index cards. The premiere lingers on this image for only a few seconds before jumping to Italy to meet our heroine, social-media...

Michaela Coel’s series is a game-changer
There’s a lot to figure out in I May Destroy You. For the characters, for the audience, and for writer/co-director and star Michaela Coel as she spins the skeins of her deeply personal 12x30-minute hybrid series. Viewers of Britain’s staidly conventional BBC1 channel have certainly never seen anything like this before, not even in the 10.45pm slot. A drama/comedy which springs from Coel’s own traumatic rape, this has the sense of an explosive, boundary-shifting, era-defining Sex In The City, Girls or Fleabag (it is also part-backed by...

British multihyphenate Michaela Coel returns to television with a new 12-part, half-hour HBO series that takes on weighty notions about sexual consent in the present day, given how much the landscape of dating and relationships has changed. Titled “I May Destroy You,” the series alternates between broad stories about sexually adventurous friends, and more individual and upsetting moments of persistent trauma. There’s nothing tidy about how this timely tale unfolds, but there’s nothing tidy about sexual assault. And the series doesn’t offer any pat, compact answers to the big questions it raises. It’s challenging and not always easy to watch, but will surely spark many conversations on the subject matter it so candidly explores.
At the center of this unconventionally structured series is Arabella (Coel), a bestselling author of a book about her millennial experience, “Chronicles of a Fed-Up Millennial,” which was essentially a series of tweets cobbled together.

In 2015, Michaela Coel’s screenwriting debut was the brilliant Chewing Gum, an E4 comedy that earned her two Baftas, an Rts win, several nominations and a considerable weight of expectation for what she’d write next.
What Coel wrote next is I May Destroy You, a BBC-HBO co-production announced last year under the working title of January 22nd. It’s the autobiographically inspired story of Bella (played by Coel), a young London writer whose drink is spiked on a night out. When she tries to piece together the events of what happened, Bella goes on a personal journey through trauma and pain that examines questions of sexual consent, liberation and exploitation in contemporary London.
Arriving on HBO and BBC One this June, here’s the latest trailer and more…
