Renny Harlin's "The Strangers: Chapter 1" is the third film in the "Strangers" series, but is intended to be the first film in a new rebooted trilogy sporting a unique continuity. Not that "The Strangers" possessed a complicated mythology; each movie follows a trio of mute, masked killers -- perhaps a family -- who have made a sport of breaking into people's houses and torturing them for kicks. In the credits of "Chapter 1," the killers are credited only as Dollface, Pin-Up Girl, and Scarecrow (previously called The Man in the Mask). This time around, they are played by Olivia Kreutzova, Letizia Fabbri, and Matúš Lajčák, respectively.
The plot of "Chapter 1" is as simple as can be: A young city couple (Madelaine Petsch and Froy Gutierrez) is driving to Portland, Oregon when they get waylaid in a small town called Venus. Naturally, their car breaks down and they have to...

We always love a good viral marketing campaign, and with Lionsgate gearing up to release The Strangers: Chapter 1 in theaters on May 17, they’re pulling out all the stops this month.
The three masked slashers from the franchise – known as Pinup Girl, Dollface and the Man in the Mask – have been showing up on home security cameras across the country!
Videos and images posted to Tiktok, Twitter, and even Next Door have been documenting the sightings, one of which is a creepy doorbell cam video of a roommate who was allegedly followed home by the masked trio earlier this month. Another video sees them lurking around outside of a gas station, eventually stopping to look directly into the security camera.
The Strangers were also spotted standing outside the Manhattan Criminal Court House, making for “a strange, slightly unsettling scene,” as one Twitter user perfectly described it.

Samuel Haskell IV, son of Hollywood agent and film producer Samuel Haskell III, has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman’s torso was found in a trash bag.
The Los Angeles Police Department arrested Haskell after someone rummaged through a dumpster at an Encino strip mall and found the body. Detectives traced the garbage bag to Haskell’s home in Tarzana, California, which he shared with his wife, three kids and in-laws.
Police were originally called to the scene after someone saw what appeared to be body parts in trash bags outside Haskell’s home. By the time police arrived, however, the bags were gone.
“There was no evidence that allowed the officers to make entry into the home,” LAPD Detective Efren Gutierrez told The New York Times.
According to officials, investigators found blood and other signs of murder inside the home.

2008’s The Strangers preyed on the audience’s fear of a creepy home invasion with masked figures. After the popularity of the movie, its sequel, plus the horror films that followed suit, like The Purge, it’s been announced that Renny Harlin, who is a veteran of the horror world with A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master, would helm a remake. That remake turned into a surprise sequel trilogy as the star, Madelaine Petsch, revealed, “It’s within the same universe, I’ll say that. It’s a trilogy. It was very fun to shoot and work with (Renny Harlin), and we shot it in Slovakia. I speak the language, so it was a delight to be in that country and work.“

The last remaining case over the use of pre-1972 sound recordings by satellite and internet radio providers has been dismissed.
A federal judge on Wednesday ruled that Pandora will not have to face a class action alleging that it violated state copyright laws by failing to pay for the reproduction and public performances of these recordings. The series of suits, most of which were filed by Flo & Eddie, asked whether laws from some states — including California, New York and Florida — provide owners of the works an exclusive right of public performance to which artists are entitled to royalties.
“One after another, federal circuit courts and state Supreme Courts answered with a resounding ‘no,’” wrote U.S. District Judge Philip Gutierrez in the order.

Tige Charity found herself unemployed from an insurance department job during the late-2000s recession. Looking to find a new sense of purpose, she began thinking about a visit she’d once made to a girls group home with her husband, actor Antonio D. Charity (The Orville), and how the home’s director had told her about the rewards of mentorship. In 2009, Tige decided to create Kids in the Spotlight (Kits), a nonprofit that helps empower foster youth through filmmaking. Kits program participants write, direct, shoot, cast and act in projects alongside mentors from the film world. “You give them the arts, create a platform for them to be seen, heard, validated and celebrated,” says Tige.

During a panel on the future of Pasifika storytelling held in downtown Los Angeles Thursday evening by the Pasifika Entertainment Advancement Komiti, Peak co-founder and executive director Kristian Fanene Schmidt proposed a question to the participants: Should the AA be separated from the Pi in Aapi? The answer regarding Asian American and Pacific Islander representation in Hollywood is as complicated as the enduring fight for greater pan-Pacific presence onscreen, the panelists noted, though the undercurrent of the hesitant responses was indeed “yes.”
“Last night at the Writer’s Guild meeting there was an Asian writer who walked up on the question side and said, ‘I’m Asian, I’m an Asian American writer, and it’s Asian American month, and I screamed out, ‘What about the PIs?’” recalled Freddie Gutierrez, a writer for Nickelodeon’s That Girl Lay Lay, who hails from Guam. “She looked and she just kept on going.

Getting up to speed in a new job is always a challenge — but Horacio Gutierrez joined Disney in 2022, as the industry as a whole continues to undergo seismic changes and the company itself was about to as well. Nonetheless, the lawyer has already hit his stride and is putting his tech background to work on the growing Disney+ streaming footprint, while also dealing with a major reorganization, guild negotiations, a certain governor who shall not be named, and more.
That’s why The Hollywood Reporter chose him as the 2023 Raising the Bar honoree. Horacio Gutierrez sits in a well-appointed conference room on the Walt Disney Studios lot overlooking Burbank and the distant San Gabriel Mountains. He started as general counsel at the now-century-old studio in 2022 and in the interim year has seen a surprise CEO change-up, ongoing org-chart overhauls and impending guild contract negotiations. He jokes, “It’s been 13 and a half months, but who’s counting?”
Gutierrez never has been deterred by an uphill battle. “I’ve gone to law school four times,” he says, noting that he first enrolled in his native Venezuela at age 16. “I was a little young, even for their standards.” Then he earned a graduate degree in corporate and commercial law in Venezuela and, after being awarded a Fulbright to study at Harvard University, Gutierrez earned a Master of Laws, sharing classrooms with notables like Barack Obama. Late last month, Ike Perlmutter, the head of Marvel Entertainment notorious for his backing of President Donald Trump, was let go by the Walt Disney Company. At the time, the official word was that Perlmutter, who acquired control over the Marvel Comics business in the late ’90s and sold it to Disney for $4 billion in 2009, had been laid off as part of larger cuts at Disney intended to cut costs and streamline businesses.
But Perlmutter, 80, says that narrative is a “convenient” one, and instead claims Disney outright fired him, according to an interview with The Wall Street Journal posted Thursday.
A spokesperson for Disney told the Journal that Horacio Gutierrez, Disney’s general counsel, called Perlmutter in late March to inform him his job was being terminated as part of the overall layoffs at the company; Perlmutter says he did “not remember” Gutierrez sharing that rationale for his dismissal.
