After years of portraying fantastical creatures, I'm glad Doug Jones finally felt comfortable enough to appear as his regular self in "The Shape of Water." While his acting career began in the late 1980s, it wasn't until the '90s that the tall, lanky maestro of disguise found his niche performing in prosthetics. His minor role as "Thin Clown" in "Batman Returns" aside, though, it was Jones' turn as William "Billy" Butcherson in director Kenny Ortega's cult 1993 fantasy comedy "Hocus Pocus" that put the actor -- who recently played the Kelpien Starfleet officer Saru on "Star Trek: Discovery" -- squarely on the map.
Billy, as we come to learn, is a ponytailed gentleman from the 17th century who was poisoned by the witch Winifred Sanderson (Bette Midler). She also proceeded to stitch his shut mouth to keep him quiet, even in death. Why so harsh? "Hocus Pocus" implies that...

If you are concerned that the Sanderson sisters from Hocus Pocus won’t be back for 2024’s Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, rest assured that they are. Do you have what it takes to be this year’s Winifred, Mary, or Sarah?
Are there any actors out there? Maybe you’ve always wanted to break into the business. Then Disney Careers is where you should head next! The Mouse is auditioning for all three sisters starting on April 12!
Unlike a lot of other casting calls we’ve seen for Disney theme park and cruise ship productions, the requirements for the Hocus Pocus Villain Spelltacular are pretty simple:
You must be at least 18 years old and authorized to work in the US, and you can’t be a cast member of the Disney College Program.
That’s it!
The auditions for the show don’t require you to appear in person.

Manic, magic, madcap … Julie Andrews is superb in the role of the flying nanny, in a film filled with amazing songs
Brilliant, entrancing, exhausting, and with thermonuclear showtunes from Richard and Robert Sherman, Disney’s hybrid live-action/animation classic from 1964 is now rereleased on home entertainment platforms for its 60th anniversary. And it has a brand-new certificate from the BBFC: upgraded from a U to a PG on account of “discriminatory language” from the eccentric seadog character Admiral Boom, who fires a cannon from his roof shouting “Fight the Hottentots!” (an obsolete term for South Africa’s indigenous Khoekhoe people). However the BBFC is evidently not bothered by the foxhunting scene in which the fox has a cod Irish accent, nor by the cheerful suicide reference made by one of the servants: “Nice spot there by Southwark Bridge, very popular with jumpers!”

Stage and screen actor best known for her role as Winifred Banks in Disney’s Mary Poppins
In the childhood memories of more than one generation, Glynis Johns, who has died aged 100, will be best remembered as the Edwardian materfamilias of the hugely popular Walt Disney musical Mary Poppins (1964). Winifred Banks, married to David Tomlinson’s George W Banks, is the mother of Jane and Michael, the children in the care of the magical nanny played by Julie Andrews. A protester for the right to vote, Winifred delivers a spirited rendition of the song Sister Suffragette – “Our daughters’ daughters will adore us. And they’ll sing in grateful chorus: ‘Well done, Sister Suffragette!’” – as the children’s previous nanny tries to quit.
But the husky-voiced actor had other claims to fame from her more than 60 films and 30 stage productions. In 1973, Stephen Sondheim composed the song Send in the Clowns for...

Writer Jen D’Angelo got her start working on episodes of shows Workaholics, Cougar Town, and Young Rock, and now she’s on a streak of successfully getting her feature scripts brought to the screen. She wrote the long-awaited sequel Hocus Pocus 2, the time travel slasher Totally Killer, and the newly released comedy Quiz Lady – and next on her to-do list is Hocus Pocus 3. D’Angelo has previously teased that the new sequel could bring Hannah Waddingham back as her Hocus Pocus 2 character The Witch Mother, and during an interview with Collider she also gave a hint as to what could bring the Sanderson Sisters back into action, seeking revenge against Salem.
D’Angelo said, “I have my theories about what we could see (in Hocus Pocus 3), and what things mean and where we could take these characters. It’s interesting to be like, ‘Now we have even...

It took nearly three decades, but the highly anticipated "Hocus Pocus" sequel finally arrived last year, just in time for Halloween. But there's even more good news for longtime fans of the spooky franchise: a third movie is officially in the works at Disney. That's right, Walt Disney Pictures president Sean Bailey shared the announcement himself in a New York Times profile published on June 4.
The publication noted that "Hocus Pocus 3" is, indeed, happening, while Bailey discussed the 50-plus movies in development and production at the company - which include upcoming live-action versions of "Moana" and "Lilo and Stitch."
No other details about the third "Hocus Pocus" were revealed at the time, including whether or not all the Sanderson sisters - Winnie (Bette Midler), Mary (Kathy Najimy), and Sarah (Sarah Jessica Parker) - will return to reprise their roles. However, screenwriter Jen D'Angelo dropped some hints in an October interview with Entertainment Weekly,...

It's Halloween, and what's the spooky season without a little "Hocus Pocus," my sweet children? The beloved Disney movie may have been a box office flop when it debuted in theaters back in the summer of 1993. But today, it's a seasonal favorite that many consider one of the greatest Halloween movies of all time. Just earlier this month, the movie re-entered the box office charts in the #10 spot, thanks to 30th anniversary screenings at theaters across the country. The love even spawned a long-anticipated sequel, and though it doesn't quite measure up to the original, there may be another one in the works at Disney.

The collectible makers at Funko have created a large line of Pop figures based on Hocus Pocus 2. There are, of course, all three Sanderson sisters, but also the new characters Cassie, Becca, Izzy, and Gilbert. Surprisingly, a new Billy Butcherson figure isn’t in the line-up. But there is The Witch Mother – and while the other Hocus Pocus 2 POPs will be available wherever POPs are sold, the Witch Mother figure will only be available through the Funko website. So if you want to get your hands on this one, head over to Funko.com before all the Witch Mother figures are sold!
ThatHashtagShow informs, “The Witch Mother plays a brief but significant role in the Disney feature Hocus Pocus 2. The character, portrayed by Ted Lasso’s Hannah Waddingham, meets the Sanderson sisters when they’re still children. Sensing witchy potential in young Winifred, the Witch Mother gives the sisters their iconic spellbook.

Don’t believe anything you read. Hocus Pocus is a damn good movie. From its opening frame, the 1993 film contains all the magic and wonder you could want from a gateway horror movie – earning its place next to other ‘90s essentials like Halloweentown. It’s got a talking black cat, spooky spellcasting, a zombie, and three children-eating witches – oh my! Released in the height of summer (July 12), the Kenny Ortega-directed feature hasn’t lost its allure. In fact, its legacy is as strong as ever. It’s still an extraordinarily fun picture 30 years later.
Hocus Pocus endures because of nostalgia. In the era of TV reboots, remakes, and requels, millennials yearn for their childhood and a simpler time. There’s a reason we got a completely unnecessary sequel last fall. But more importantly, Hocus Pocus defines an entire generation of horror fans. For many, it was their very first spooky movie.

A couple days ago, we learned that Hocus Pocus 3 is in development at the Disney+ streaming service – and now The Wrap has confirmed that this sequel is coming from the same creative team as the previous sequel! Hocus Pocus 2 director Anne Fletcher is returning to direct the film from a screenplay by Hocus Pocus 2 writer Jen D’Angelo. Although we know who’s making the movie now, details on the plot they’re brewing up are still being kept under wraps.
The original cult favorite Hocus Pocus was released in 1993. Directed by Kenny Ortega from a screenplay credited to Mick Garris and Neil Cuthbert (and based on story Garris crafted with David Kirschner), that film was about a trio of witch sisters who have been cursed since 1963. The fearsome threesome is inadvertently resurrected 300 years later by a boy whose family has moved from Los Angeles to Salem. As they...

The Sanderson sisters are poised to put a spell on audiences again.
A third Hocus Pocus movie is officially in the works.
The news broke on Sunday when The New York Times shared a profile on Sean Bailey, the president of Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Production.
News of the latest chapter in the franchise isn't much of a surprise given that Disney+ revealed that the years-in-the-works Hocus Pocus 2 delivered enormous numbers for the streaming service upon its launch last year.
The original Hocus Pocus premiered in theaters in 1993, but the film was a commercial disaster.
However, the movie became a cult hit as the years passed, with many calling for a sequel.
The good news is that the sequel reached much success and has seemingly given Disney the desire to expand the franchise some more.

Hocus Pocus was first released in 1993 and directed by Kenny Ortega from a screenplay by Mick Garris and Neil Cuthbert and a story by David Kirschner and Garris. The film follows a trio of witches who are inadvertently resurrected by a teenage boy on Halloween night.
Although it was not a box office hit, over the years the film would achieve cult...

The first time Hocus Pocus 2 director Anne Fletcher saw the film’s stars — Sarah Jessica Parker (Sarah), Bette Midler (Winifred), and Kathy Najimy (Mary) — in full costume, she felt the way fans of the 1993 original likely will. “It was surreal,” she admits. “You were thrown back 29 years and you’re like, how is it possible they look the same?” (Credit: Disney+) Movie magic aside, the sequel, set in modern-day Salem, Massachusetts, has a unique story as the Sanderson sisters battle a wily trio of high school girls. Still, fans can expect familiar staples, like a new musical number, even if, Fletcher concedes, “You can’t compete with [first film showstopper] ‘I Put a Spell on You.’” Other witchy treats? “The most important things for me were bringing back a black cat and Billy,” aka everybody’s favorite zombie (reprised by Doug Jones.) “Billy had to be in the movie.” That’s a resurrection to look forward to!

Twenty-nine years after its theatrical release in 1993, "Hocus Pocus" has gone from earning middling reviews and bombing at the box office to becoming requisite viewing for spooky season. But as much as its wry humor, sly innuendos, and memorably idiosyncratic elements have stood the test of time, the film's outlook toward witchcraft has not.
In "Hocus Pocus," the evil-doing Sanderson Sisters and, by extension, witches in general are shown to be vain, selfish women who use magic to literally feed on the life force of the god-fearing citizens of Salem, Massachusetts in the 17th century. Don't get me wrong, they make for fantastic, campy villains in the context of a '90s Disney comedy, but so far as on-screen depictions of witchcraft are concerned, they're fairly conservative.
Judging by its trailers, the fast-approaching sequel "Hocus Pocus 2" won't, per se, attempt to ret-con the Sanderson Sisters as being wrongly vilified...

In the most recent trailer for Hocus Pocus 2, we get a taste of some backstory footage that’s set over 300 years prior to the events of the original movie, revealing that we’re going to be meeting the Sanderson Sisters as kids in the upcoming sequel. Ahead of Hocus Pocus 2 arriving on Disney+ on September 30, producer David Kirschner teases that trip into the past.
The Broadway Podcast network’s hit show The Art of Kindness with Robert Peterpaul, hosted by actor & journalist Robert Peterpaul, just debuted the first part of their interview with Kirschner, the creator of Hocus Pocus and the producer of the new sequel. The Art of Kindness spotlights kindness in the arts through intimate conversations with industry powerhouses who use their platforms to make the world a better place. Kirschner joined Peterpaul to discuss the kindness of making the cult classic, along with what to expect from the upcoming sequel.

Another virgin could reignite that Black Flame Candle. Ahead of the upcoming sequel, the Sanderson sisters—a.k.a. Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy—said they would certainly conjure a third Hocus Pocus film. "I'd love to have a franchise—especially a character I love playing," Midler said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly published Sept. 13. "If there was a third one, of course I'd sign on, but I don't know how. I can't imagine what the story would be, but I love Winifred, Sarah, Mary and our relationship. It's good for women. We stick together through hell and high water, but we do cause mayhem, and not...

Fresh off of Disney’s presentation at the D23 Expo comes a brand-new trailer for Hocus Pocus 2, the much-anticipated sequel to the classic Halloween movie. The trailer delves into the origins of Winifred (Bette Midler), Sarah (Sarah Jessica Parker), and Mary (Kathy Najimy), who seem to receive their first lessons from a very witchy Hannah Waddingham.
The glimpse we see of younger versions of the Sanderson Sisters confirms what director Anne Fletcher teased several weeks ago.
The opening sequence of the movie, we get some history of our witches and Billy. We get a little kiss — pardon the pun — of the Billy aspect of it and the world that they lived in and what happened to the witches. I always missed that in the first one. Like, what are the witches the way they are? I did have that question, and the script came, and I loved the opening 1600s.

A new “Hocus Pocus 2” trailer arrived at Disney’s D23 Expo, forecasting the return of the Sanderson sisters.
“I banish thee from Salem, forever.” a Reverend’s voice booms at the beginning as younger versions of the witchy trio run through a field and some woods.
“Ted Lasso” actress Hannah Waddingham’s character appears, transforming from a bird to a woman to wish the sisters a happy sixteenth birthday.
“They were right to fear thee,” she says. “Magic has a way of uniting.”
The trailer transitions to a spooky shop, set 375 years later, where owner Gilbert (Sam Richardson) says “I have a gift for my favorite customers.”
“Legend has it, it’s on the 16th birthday that a witch gets her powers,” he continues, giving two young girls the mysterious candle that summons the Sanderson sisters back to Salem.

Disney has released the official trailer for “Hocus Pocus 2,” in which the Sanderson sisters will once again put a spell on you. The new trailer debuted at the D23 Expo with an introduction from Disney Chairman Alan Bergman.
“It is a film that exists thanks to the overwhelming love all of you have here for the Sanderson sisters,” Bergman shared before re-introducing the crowd to a cute produced video hello from the sisters themselves.
Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy and Doug Jones are reprising their roles from the original 1993 film. Hannah Waddingham, Tony Hale, Sam Richardson, Lilia Buckingham, Belissa Escobedo and Whitney Peak also star in the sequel, along with “Drag Race” queens Ginger Minj, Kahmora Hall and Kornbread “The Snack” Jeté.
Waddingham’s role was revealed to be the witch who gives young Midler the book of magic, thus revealing a 370 year secret as to how the Sanderson sisters became magical.

For as much as humans are the stars of Disney's 1993 box office failure-turned Halloween cult classic "Hocus Pocus," they've got serious competition from Thackery Binx. Of course, it helps that the adorable, irritable feline — who, as seen in the film's 17th-century-set prologue, was once a teen boy cursed to live forever as a talking black cat by the Sanderson Sisters — is voiced by the talented Jason Marsden. The actor also provided the vocals for Max Goof in "A Goofy Movie" and has reprised the role in other Disney-animated projects since then.
"Hocus Pocus" seems to close the book on Binx's story in its final minutes. Having done his part to send the resurrected Sanderson Sisters back to the grave, Binx's soul is finally set free at the end of the movie, allowing him to join his sister Emily in the afterlife. So what's up with the black cat who...

Relighting the Black Flame Candle won’t bring Omri Katz or Vinessa Shaw back for the “Hocus Pocus” sequel.
The highly-anticipated sequel to the 1993 Disney flick sees Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy reprise their roles as the witchy Sanderson Sisters, but Katz and Shaw – who played the teen protagonists Max and Allison in the original – will not return.
Director Anne Fletcher tells EW they tried to fit Max and Allison back into the story but “it was difficult”.
“We wanted to weave in all of the people that the fans loved, and when you sat back with all the ingredients and story, you’re like, how do we make this work?” Fletcher asks. “It was very difficult to try to have them be a part of it, because we did talk about it — painstakingly.”
