Former AMC psychodrama “Mary & George” has made the transition over to Starz with a 2024 premiere date, Starz announced on Thursday.
Starring Julianne Moore and Nicholas Galitzine, the seven-part series is inspired by the true story of Mary Villiers (Moore), who moulded her beautiful and charismatic son, George (Galitzine), to seduce King James VI of Scotland and I of England and become his all-powerful lover. “Through scheming, the pair rose from humble beginnings to become the richest, most titled and influential players the English court had ever seen, and the King’s most trusted advisors. All this at a time when England’s place on the world stage was under threat from a Spanish invasion and rioters were taking to the streets to denounce the King,” reads the official description.

Starz has secured the rights for Mary & George, a historical psychodrama featuring Academy Award-winner Julianne Moore and Nicholas Galitzine. The series revolves around a conniving mother and son who employ schemes, seduction, and murder to ascend the ranks of the Court of England and win the favor of King James I. “Mary & George is the perfect complement to Starz’s provocative slate, and we’re thrilled to partner with Sky Studios to bring this extraordinary series to U.S. audiences,” said Alison Hoffman, President of Domestic Networks for Starz. “We can’t wait for the world to discover the untold story of Mary Villiers, who mastered the art of sexual and political conquests in a male-dominated society. And to have Julianne leading this remarkable cast is a dream.” In 17th century England, Moore takes on the role of Mary Villiers, the Countess of Buckingham. Julianne Moore and “Red, White & Royal Blue” star Nicholas Galitzine play a scheming mother and son duo with murder on their minds in the upcoming series “Mary & George.”
The period drama, whose U.S. and Canada rights were acquired by Starz, follows a “treacherous mother and son who schemed, seduced and killed to conquer the Court of England and the bed of King James,” according to the official logline.
Inspired by a true story, Moore takes on the role of Countess of Buckingham Mary Villiers, who guided her son, George, to seduce King James I (Tony Curran) in 17th century England in the hopes of becoming his all-powerful lover.
“Mother, have you found me a wife yet?” Galitzine’s George asked in the teaser, to which Moore’s Mary responds, “I think we aim higher.”

Mary & George, which stars Julianne Moore and Nicholas Galitzine, has a new U.S. home.
The series was originally set to air on AMC in the U.S. and will now move to Starz. It is a co-production with British pay-tv broadcaster Sky. Watch the new teaser trailer above.
AMC Networks was planning to air it in the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand. It’s not clear why AMC dropped the drama series, but it comes as AMC has been cost-cutting and axing shows such as including Demascus, Invitation to a Bonfire and second seasons of Pantheon, Moonhaven and 61st Street.
Enter Starz, which will now air the seven-part series in the U.S. and Canada along its swath of period dramas.

What would happen if “Glee” cutthroat cheer coach Sue Sylvester met ditzy “Party Down” actor Constance Carmell? Well, according to Jane Lynch, the performer behind both characters, the two would actually get along quite nicely.
“I think they’d be fast friends,” Lynch told Variety at the Season 3 premiere of “Party Down.” “Constance is not the smartest person in the world, but she’s confident in her own goodness. And she has great self-esteem, and deep down inside Sue Sylvester does not. They would be a great…good cop, bad cop. They could do a comic cop show, but I would have to play both characters, and it would be a lot more. Wouldn’t it be great, though?”

“I gave up hope about five years ago — before that I was saying it’s definitely going to happen, definitely going to happen and then I gave up,” Marino told The Hollywood Reporter at the L.A. premiere on Wednesday night. “And then about three years later I got an email saying, ‘Oh we’re going to do this.’ So the moral of the story is give up hope on things, and then maybe they’ll circle back to you.”

“Becoming Elizabeth” creator Anya Reiss doesn’t commonly watch period dramas. In fact, she thought the story of Queen Elizabeth I and her Tudor ancestors had been discussed to death. So why, then, embark on telling the story of an adolescent Elizabeth? It was the discovery of a story she hadn’t heard before: Elizabeth’s relationship at the age of fifteen with her stepmother Katherine Parr’s husband, Thomas Seymour. The relationship is debated among Tudor scholars to this day, many claiming the encounter never happened or that Elizabeth was assaulted by Seymour. For Reiss, who spoke to IndieWire via phone, it was “a grooming story through the eyes of someone [being groomed].”
The Tudors have graced screens, both big and small, since the release of the 1910 silent feature “Henry VIII and Catherine Howard.” Since that time Henry VIII and his six wives have been the focus of narrative features and documentaries,...

Starz’s P-Valley had a big return for the start of its second season, driven by record growth on the premium cable outlet’s streaming app.
The June 3 premiere for the critical favorite, created by Katori Hall, gathered 4.5 million viewers across platforms in the United States over its first three days, Starz says. The bulk of those viewers came from the Starz app, where viewing of P-Valley grew by more than 11 times — 1,018 percent, to be precise — compared to the series premiere in 2020.
The premiere’s on-air audience was just 243,000 viewers (in line with the 261,000 who watched the series debut on July 12, 2020). Replays over the weekend bumped up the linear total some, but as is usually the case with premium cablers in recent years, the great majority of P-Valley’s audience came via other means.

On a late April evening this year, dozens of cars sat parked in front of a large, inflatable screen outside the Rose Bowl in Pasadena for a pop-up drive-in experience. Such socially distanced screenings have seen a resurgence in these pandemic times, but this wasn’t any ordinary drive-in.
This crowd consisted of Emmy voters, who had all made the trek to watch an episode of Bravo’s “Top Chef” while snacking on such artisan dishes as Korean fried chicken with a kimchi dipping sauce, a pupusa with braised jerk pork and cheddar masa, and popcorn sprinkled with chicken-skin furikake and spiced caramel.
It was a twist on the Emmy For Your Consideration events of yore, when Television Academy members and their guests would trek to a venue to watch an episode of a contender, sit through a panel with series stars and producers, and then gorge on free food and booze in the lobby.

Starz has released the results of a nationwide consumer survey, which affirms the demand for diverse, authentic and inclusive representation within the entertainment industry.
The study, titled “Give The People What They Want: US Audiences and Their Appetite for Multicultural Media Content,” was conducted in partnership with UCLA’s Center for Scholars & Storytellers.
Polling adults between the ages of 18 and 54, it found that cast and creator diversity are two of the top drivers of how audiences choose content. 60.4% of respondents said that diversity behind the camera is important, while 49.1% noted the importance of having women behind the camera.
At the same time, respondents felt that authentic representation is still lacking, among both women and racial/ethnic minorities. Just 35.7% of respondents of from racial/ethnic minority groups said they felt well represented in today’s media, and only 38.5% of women said the same, compared to 59.7% of men.
