We are just days away from Season 2 of HBO’s “The Gilded Age,” and the excitement — at least on IndieWire’s TV team — is palpable. Julian Fellowes’ period drama about New York socialites in the late-19th century returns on October 29, sure to promise more scenery chewing and backstabbing from Christine Baranski, Carrie Coon, Cynthia Nixon, and the rest of the cast.
“The Gilded Age” Season 1 premiered in January 2022, so it’s been some time since viewers caught up with the old-school Upper East Side crew. Who hates whom, who stole someone else’s servant, who accidentally-almost slept with a maid, and who’s hiding their sexuality while pursuing a marriage? Some of it matters, some of it doesn’t — but all of it will be a treat to watch as both high and low drama unfold in Season 2.
Before that, here’s everything to remember about “The Gilded Age...

“Maudie” director Aisling Walsh describes her upcoming feature, “Ethel,” in recognizable terms. “We all understand what it is to struggle to be the best at what we can,” Walsh tells Variety. “We’re all looking for that chance to make something happen.”
Written by Celeste Parr, produced by Marie-Claude Poulin (“Brooklyn”) of Sphere Media, and presented at this year’s Venice Production Bridge gap-financing market, “Ethel” tells the true story of Ethel Stark – a trailblazing Canadian musician who broke barriers when she founded a mixed-race, all-female orchestra in the 1940s. A violinist and conductor, Stark eventually brought her Montreal-based ensemble all the way to Carnegie Hall, becoming the first to woman to conduct there.
“Shtisel” and “Unorthodox” lead Shira Haas is attached to star – as revealed exclusively in Variety – with the Canadian-Irish co-production aiming to shoot next year.
“The film is about women finding their voice,” says Walsh. “The orchestra changed their lives.

Lately, for Hayden Silas Anhedönia, time feels like a slippery concept. If she’s not playing shows halfway across the world, she’s usually tucked away in her bedroom, a quiet hideaway in Pittsburgh with a sloped roof that doubles as a portal to another world.
Here, the hours glide by, one after the other. She might spend 12, 13, even 14 hours trapped inside, leaning over her computer, lost in the expansive sounds she’s creating. “You’ll get up at 9 a.m. to start working, and then you’re like, ‘Oh,...

David Harbour recently scored some major stepdad points.
During an appearance on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, the “Stranger Things” actor spoke about managing to get tickets to Taylor Swift’s Minnesota “Eras Tour” gig.
He said he “had to call in a lot of favours” to nab the coveted tickets, according to Billboard.
And Harbour’s surprises for his steppdaughter didn’t end there.

The classic TV series I Love Lucy aired 180 episodes. The series premiered in 1951 and aired its final episode in 1957. Despite ending more than 60 years ago, I Love Lucy remains a beloved show, amassing new fans even today. While most episodes are considered classic and iconic, a few scenes are more treasured than all the others. Not all of them were scripted. In fact, the show’s iconic grape stomping scene was completely unscripted, and the fight was the real deal.

Fans of the classic sitcom often cite the chocolate factory scene, with Lucy and Ethel shoveling chocolates into their mouths and blouses, as comedy gold. The upcoming dramedy “In Fidelity” takes viewers through a surprising, difficult-to-answer question: Can you get a hall pass from your spouse if you’re dying?
Starring “Saturday Night Live” alum Chris Parnell and Cara Buono, “In Fidelity” tells the story of Lyle and Holly, a happily married New York couple whose world is rocked when Holly becomes terminally ill — and asks to sleep with their well-known rock star neighbor (Dennis Haysbert) before she dies young.
It’s not an easy ask, even after Lyle says yes, and you can see for yourself in the humorously bittersweet trailer, right now at the top of the page.
Alongside Parnell, Buono and Hasbert, the film also features Willow Shields (‘’The Hunger Games’’) as their risk-taking Gen-z daughter, and Illeana Douglas (“Grace of My Heart”) as Lyle and Holly’s eccentric confidante Ethel.

One little lie sparked a whole hell of a lot of trouble. Who knew the town would freak out that much over two teens hooking up?
Cheryl and Archie's secret nearly turned their worlds upside down on Riverdale Season 7 Episode 4.
The teens at Riverdale High might think twice about what lies they tell next. The parents weren't playing around with how far they'd go to keep things sweet in Riverdale.
"Chapter One Hundred Twenty-One: Love & Marriage" was an interesting example of how the 1950s mindset blended with Riverdale's flair of soapy drama and mystery.
Rushed marriages. "Going through phases." Making it big with easy-to-achieve dreams. Even though it was a simpler time, simpler doesn't mean it wasn't messy.
Case in point: Archie and Cheryl's lie.
In true Blossom fashion, Cheryl's story spiraled out of control with lots of flair and dramatics. If you thought it was bad, things kept getting worse for their outlook.

Carol Locatell, who had a memorable turn as the foulmouthed mother Ethel Hubbard in Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning and worked alongside Burt Reynolds in three films, has died. She was 82.
Locatell died April 11 at her home in Sherman Oaks after a long battle with cancer, her husband, songwriter and record producer Gregory Prestopino, told The Hollywood Reporter. They were together for 50 years.
Locatell moved from Los Angeles to New York in the mid-1980s to shake up her career, and from her first audition there she landed a part on Broadway in Neil Simon’s Broadway Bound, which premiered in 1986. She then appeared in The Shadow Box in 1994 and in The Rose Tattoo a year later.

Carol Locatell was born on December 13, 1940 – a date that happens to have been a Friday the 13th. So it seems very fitting that when she embarked on an acting career, her role in the 1985 slasher Friday the 13th: A New Beginning (watch it Here) would turn out to become the role she was best known for. Locatell delivered a hilarious performance in that film, making the foul-mouthed Ethel Hubbard someone fans have been having fun watching for nearly forty years now. Sadly, Locatell is no longer with us. She passed away recently at the age of 82. Ron Sloan, who played Ethel’s dimwitted son Junior in Friday the 13th: A New Beginning, broke the news of her passing on social media last night.
Sloan wrote,
Dearest friends, fans, and Horror family,
With great sadness, it breaks my heart to announce that my Friday the 13th Part 5 Mom, (Ethel Hubbard) Carol Locatell has passed away.

I Love Lucy ran on CBS for six seasons from 1951-1957. The series, which centered around Lucy and Ricky Ricardo and their friends Fred and Ethel Mertz, was a sensation in its time and still lives in syndication seven decades later.
I Love Lucy is considered one of the funniest shows of all time. Lucy and Ricky Ricardo were played by real-life husband and wife, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. Much of the comedy stemmed from their real-life issues and Lucy’s ability to always get herself into trouble.
The Ricardos did not go it alone. Their landlords, neighbors, and friends were couple Fred and Ethel Mertz. Ethel was alongside Lucy for most of her shenanigans, but there was a lot more to the Mertzs than just being sidekicks to the Ricardos.
Who played Ethel Mertz on ‘I Love Lucy’?
Lucy’s bestie, Ethel Mertz, was played by Vivian Vance.

Riverdale spiced things up this week with a steamy make-out party — and mixed up a few of the main couples, too.
We start out Wednesday’s episode by learning why Ethel is covered in blood: Her parents were both stabbed to death, and she says the milkman did it. Everyone is skeptical, though, because the local milkman is in his 70s. Penelope doesn’t like Cheryl’s sexy paintings of the female form (or her suggestively eating a papaya at breakfast), so she pushes Julian to find his sister a boyfriend. Archie isn’t ready to give Veronica another chance yet,...
