This movie used to delight me as a child, when it used to be broadcast on television fairly frequently. It used to fill me with pleasure (although my slightly younger brother didn't enjoy it as much as I did) and I have wanted to see it again for the longest time. It far surpasses any other filmed version. I wasn't so crazy about the child actress who played "Alice" -- she seemed a little too old and ungainly and much too petulant to me even then. But why quibble when the entire movie experience is so utterly enchanting. The rest of the cast alone makes this worth watching, no matter what your age. I seem to remember seeing it on TV within the last 15 years or so...
