Review of Sweet Dreams

Sweet Dreams (1985)
5/10
Disappointing

I'll say one thing for this movie. Jessica Lange looks great in it, and almost unrecognizable as herself. Her unbridled enthusiasm as Patsy Cline is something I've never seen her do before.

But the movie is a stinker. I suppose the actors, writers, directors, producers, et. al., did about as well as they could, but there isn't much to work with, unless one finds it fascinating that a woman of means would stay married to a hard-drinking, violent man who cheats on her from time to time.

But if the real Patsy Cline didn't leave Charlie Dick, then I suppose the celluloid Patsy is stuck with him, too. It just doesn't interest me to see them fight and make up, fight and make up, over and over.

I got the impression that the filmmakers intended for the audience to find some redeeming qualities in Charlie. But I didn't. The celluloid Charlie was a macho jerk of the first order. It's a bit scary to think that the real Charlie was probably worse.

Maybe Ed Harris should just get himself cast in a monster movie... as the monster.
