Tommy Boy (1995)
7/10
One of the best "dumb" comedies I've ever seen.

Dumb comedies... you know you love them. "Dumb and Dumber", for example. You might say it's a stupid movie, but guess what? You laugh at it. It might not require intellectual interpretations of the source material (ala Marx Brothers, with their countless broken logic jokes), but it gets the job done.

Tommy Boy, in this regard, has to be one of the best "dumb" comedies ever. Better yet, it's not that dumb.

The basic premise of the movie is, a man in search of his own identity via a series of comedic mishaps. The real premise of the movie is laughter. It's all about Chris Farley and David Spade's over the top performances. Think the destruction of famous hotels in Las Vegas. Everything is all quiet, then there's a sudden build-up leading to a blow-up of gigantic proportions. That's Chris Farley throughout the film.

*minor spoilers ahead* I like this movie a lot for what it is and what it portrays - the main character (Tommy) is not a reckless man - he's a sweet, loving person who suddenly discovers he's a grown up who has to act like one, and as such, he lovingly follows his father's footsteps. The side story finds David Spade realizing he has wasted his life as an ironic, sarcastic man and finds comfort in the friendship of the guy he hated the most at school. It's strange to find at least a bit of meaning in what really is a very good comedy.

I like it. I really do.
