Review of Holes

Holes (2003)
Violence
6 May 2003
I am surprised more people do not notice the political correctness of this story. This book was forced on my daughter in school and she was forced to spend one month on this story and write a report on every chapter.

Needless to say she has no interest in seeing the film. The real reason this film is popular with the schools and the media is probably the racially motivated violence which has been a staple of education in America since Roots. Of course it has been a dismal failure in creating an utopian society and racial tensions in America are higher than ever. Also, while 2 race one night stands may up due to carefully crafted guilt, surely weddings are not. All other ethnic groups freely marry because their history is blended and common experiences are focused on in film and education.

Holes is just another in a long line of films and philosophy that believes rage, bitterness, and guilt will lead to a happy integrated society. The acting and the camera work are not the problem. It is social engineering in films and agenda driven awards that completely take in naive parents and educators. One can only feel sorry for kids that manipulative adults run so much. Worse, is that we all live in a race and gender driven iron cage in this country when there is such a large world of ideas out there. When it comes to just plain fun, Harry Potter or Princess Diaries was much better for kids and everyone. If race must be explored there is no finer serious film ever made than the recent brilliant Bruce Willis film: Tears in the Sun which though violent should be seen by mature teenagers. But Holes is in a sense just propaganda aimed.
