Why such harsh reviews?
7 August 2004
To start, the action/fighting sequences in House of Daggers eclipse those in CTHD or Hero. It shouldn't be the basis for someone liking the film more than the others, but for those who only care about the action it might be worth noting. I've noticed people asking about movies like Hero or Ong Bak (terrible film by the way) mainly due to the fact they have flashy trailers with interesting fight sequences, and they are geared towards a North American audience. That is the mind state I went into when watching this film. It was, or is being geared towards America, so I wasn't really concered with the authenticity of the story or portrail of the time period.

I don't want to spoil anything, and I won't...but the story really fell a bit short for me at the end. It's not that the first portion of the movie was amazing or anything, but the last 30 minutes were a bit much. If not for the end, I would have given this a better review.

I don't like to get into the plot details, more just offer a short opinion on the movies I've seen. I found myself rewinding the fighting in the bamboo over and over just in awe over the camera work. If anything, Zhang should be recognized for his artistic fighting scenes, as the bamboo in myu opinion rivaled that of the water scene in Hero
