American Look (1958)
10/10
style is freedom
7 May 2006
American Look is great short which is interested in American design and living style of the end of fifties. It brings near the richness of morphology and aesthetics invention of the designers by the extended footage of various objects, places and activities. The design is the style in fact. It is a medium of aesthetics unity of the everyday life. Colors, patterns, textures, shapes and forms are formidable in communication with themselves. The conviction that daily life can be beauty is the way out of American style in the middle of the 20th century. The beauty has many faces in this conception: beauty is fun and cheerful {the happiest colors}, beauty is freedom {large areas and rooms, practical furniture, airy spaces}, beauty is family {everyone has own privacy and all members can be together comfortably}. And "last but not least": the freedom is individual choice. All the movie is very impressive. There is attractive camera and wonderful work with the lights and composition of colors and shapes, so the movie is not only the footage, but the real movie {based on specific dynamics}. I must recommend this short to all who love the atmosphere of interiors and exteriors movies from the late fifties and early sixties {for example North by Northwest} and esthetics of American pop art, because in these kind of style everyone can find the roots of it. The first part of movie tells about the house style, the second one is interested in the city style and last part is mostly concentrated on the car industry.
