Review of Galia

Galia (1966)
Birth of an actress
26 November 2006
When this movie was released,it got a PG 18.Today,well ...Yes we see briefly Mireille Darc in the nude, but it would not shock a nun today.

"Galia" is another offbeat production in Georges Lautner's uneven production, not as good as his strange works ("la Maison Assassinée" "Le Septième Juré " "La Route de Salina" ),but different from his usual commercial stuff ,the likes of "Ne Nous Fachons Pas".

Galia is the story of a "free girl" who plays around and treats men the way they treat girls.Enter a woman,Nicole who tries to commit suicide in the Seine.Galia takes in the desperate woman and tries to explain to her that men are numerous and that anyway they do not deserve one should die for their sake ! The first half of the movie is rather exciting,Mireille Darc portrays a woman-before-woman's lib ,close to Brigitte Bardot's attitude, who can do without a man to protect her...till she meets Nicole's hubby,an Italian sentimental macho..And it becomes much less exciting...cause Galia falls head over heels in love with that man .

There is also a detective story side ,sometimes we think of a conspiracy, which some disturbing pictures encourage: Nicole, hidden in her husband's apartment,an orgy, the morgue...

"Galia" is a sixties movie, when people used to eat condensed milk on "Triscottes "(a new hip rusk),when people were as far as politics and social concern as they could be ,a world about to collapse two years later when May 68 happened.
