A Box-full of Vengeance
16 April 2007
Few films about the troubled Viet-Nam veteran are as well created or received as "Rolling Thunder." True, there are many other notable films about the 'Nam' vet, but they dwell mostly on the tragic effects of the war and the systemic recovery of the ex-soldier. This film takes former POW, Major Charles Rane (William Devane, in one of his finest roles) and delivers him stateside to his wife and son. His city, presents Major Rane with a large box of newly minted silver dollars, for each day he suffered as a captured American soldier. ($2,225 + 1) This lavish gift, attracts a group of unsavory characters who raid his home, murder his family and leave him for dead. The torture and mutilation of the Ex-Vet, sets Rane on a mission to hunt them down and kill 'em. Accompanying Rane on this nearly suicidal mission is his former POW companion, Sargent Johnny Vohden (Tommy Lee Jones) who plays it to the hilt. Jones and Devane face multiple obstacles and a gang of violent men led by James Best and Luke Askew as Automatic Slim. Together, the two veteran soldiers, search out and confront their merciless adversaries with multiple weapons and a searing volcanic rage known best to those who fear only failure in avenging their family. With superior explosive action, dark drama and an excellent cast, this film is a made to order classic for Devane and Lee. ****
