Whilst Not An Outright Classic, Just Shoot Me Is A Good Laugh

Before Ugly Betty came onto the scene and arrived on our TV screens, shows such as Veronica's Closet, Suddenly Susan and Just Shoot Me highlighted the role of the fashion magazine industry during the 90s era. Out of the three, the latter sitcom became the most successful- although for an NBC produced show it was predominately overlooked in favour of the successful big wigs, Friends, Frasier and Will and Grace. Lasting 4 years it starred George Segal as Jack Gallo, boss of magazine Blush and Laura San Giocomo as his daughter Mya, of whom Jack hires after she was initially fired from her previous job. Mya tries to fit in and eventually falls out and forms alliances with Nina Van Horn an ex- model, Dennis Finch and photographer, Elliot.

I have to say that when I first saw a couple of the earlier episodes, I thought that this is not going to be good, but later on as the series progressed, the jokes were funnier and the situations were somewhat outlandish but also hilarious.

Wendy Malick is just brilliant as Nina- feisty, sassy but also hilarious and her love/hate relationship with Finch, played by former comic David Spade is one of the strengths of the show. She has terrific comic timing and her delivery is almost perfect, she makes it look simple (she also did really well when she appeared during the final season of Frasier as Martin Crane's girlfriend). Wendy is one of those actresses of whom deserves a show of her own. Spade is also good as the sarcastic and often mischievous, Finch. At times, his one-liners can bring the smile to the audiences's faces. Elliot is less shallow and self-centred compared to Nina and Finch and whilst some had raised eyebrows when he and Mya became a couple, he eventually becomes more down-to-earth and subtle. George Segal is also good as Jack as he successfully manages to juggle both on screen roles as boss of a successful firm and a father.

It is not an absolute classic by any means, but Just Shoot Me is a fun little sitcom held together by the ensemble cast of Malick, Spade and Enrico. The humour is very much sarcasm laced with shots of insults, put downs and crazy outbursts- and yet that is no bad thing for this show, because it is done in a way that is intelligent but witty at the same time too.

If you like your sitcoms but prefer something completely different to Friends, Frasier, Will and Grace to name, then give Just Shoot me a try.
