WrestleMania XXVII (2011 TV Special)

WrestleMania XXVII review. One of the worst of all time but what did you expect?
28 April 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Over the years WrestleMania has been special with great battles involving Shawn Michaels, Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, Undertaker, Andre The Giant, Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Simply put WrestleMania has always had something that everybody will remember forever. But this year with numerous wrestlers leaving the WWE including Shawn Michaels, Batista & Chris Jericho and with top stars like Edge, Triple H, Rey Mysterio and the Undertaker just out the door the WWE was left with hardly any top stars to make the show of shows any good. So the WrestleMania feeling that I get every year was gone. This year there wasn't any matches that could have really made this years WrestleMania as special as past years WrestleMania's Except for maybe Triple H vs Undertaker, but looking at the card going in it had potential show steeling matches so I was still looking forward to it somewhat.

WWE shook things up by bringing in The Rock as the special guest host of WrestleMania and his rivalry with John Cena and The Miz, as well as Stone Cold Steve Austin being involved with the Jerry Lawler and Michael Cole match got me interested enough to order the PPV. So here is my review: WARNING CONTAINS SPOILERS

Now the thing I was mad about the most is that The Rock got 20 minutes of air time at the start to cut a promo which was enjoyable, but it meant that the United States Championship match between Sheamus and Daniel Bryan was cut completely out of the show. Sheamus and Daniel Bryan really could have stolen the show and it really is a disgrace that they were cut from the show.

Surprisingly the World Title match between Edge and Alberto del Rio was up first and I really liked this match. It really deserved to be one of the main events and probably would have if the WWE knew that Edge would be forced to retire a couple of weeks later. I give it an 8 out of 10 The next match was Rey Mysterio vs Cody Rhodes. Another solid match which showcased some really flashy offense from Mysterio and put over Rhodes pretty well. I really like this rivalry and they should pull off some good matches. I give it an 8.5 out of 10 After this was a really bad backstage segment of Hornswoggle rapping which took about 3 minutes out of the show which again could have been added to the Daniel Bryan/Sheamus match.

Up next was the 8 man tag team match which I wasn't really looking forward to. And it was worse that I expected. It went for a duration of a minute. Why not take out the pointless backstage segments and put some time on the matches? 1 out of 10 CM Punk vs Randy Orton was up next and it was a very solid encounter. Some really good story telling by Orton and Punk here and a pretty good ending as well. 8.5/10 After this there was a really pointless backstage segment involving Pee Wee Herman. Now the WWE has got to understand that we don't care about celebrities, especially Pee Wee Herman and that we want to watch some wrestling!

Jerry Lawler vs Michael Cole w/Jack Swagger and Stone Cold Steve Austin as the special guest referee was up next. Now this is a hard match to review, because it had its moments but it dragged on for about 10 minutes which is way to long for a gimmick match like this. This really should have been the match that went for a minute and if the WWE had cut this match to at least 4 minutes, again we could have had Daniel Bryan vs Sheamus. 6 out of 10

Now up next was the Undertaker vs Triple H match and it was intense. It was a really brutal brawl and really has to be watched live to be believed that Triple H could have really ended the streak. It was an unbelievable match, not perfect but I have to give it a 10 out of 10 just because of the emotion of this match.

Now this is when the show really went down hill. The mixed tag match was up next and was really poor. But id have to admit Snooki actually impressed me somewhat. And again, we really do not care about celebrities. I actually didn't even know who Snooki is. You could have taken this match out and put Ziggler vs Morrison which somehow involved Snooki. That could have been watchable. 3 out of 10 Now the main event was up next and it was the WWE Championship match between The Miz and John Cena. Very, Very poor is all i can say for this. It really shouldn't have been the main event because no matter how much you love Cena he is a like a log in the middle of the ring. Same goes for the Miz. Then came the ending, just when it couldn't be bad enough it ended so badly. This is a WrestleMania main event we are talking about. This is the headline of the biggest show on earth. Not even The Rock's appearance could save this match from being one of the biggest jokes in WWE history. 6.5 out of 10

Overall the show started well but the Undertaker vs Triple H match definitely should have gone last. If the Undertaker/Triple H match was moved to the main event and the backstage segments were cut out to make time for the Daniel Bryan/Sheamus match it would be a different story. But because of these decisions this show was a failure but with the card that WWE has to offer and the direction the company is going in what could you expect?
