SaGa Frontier (1997 Video Game)
5/10
Multiple characters and multiple stories, sounds great...but they dropped the ball.

I owned this game at one point, and part of me wishes I still did. This is not due to the fact that this game was overly good or anything, its just that I now enjoy collecting video games. I wish I had all the games I traded in, even the really horrid ones. This game was from Square, which to me always means awesome games...for the most part. This is one of those games that fall into the other part. Not that it is all bad, it just is not all that good. It falls into the middle and with a few more improvements it could of easily been a classic. Of course, if it got any worse it could be a unplayable game. This one lets you pick one of seven characters and you must guide them along in their quest. You have a character looking for revenge, a character looking to buff up on her magic and then you have Lute, the character who kills this game for me. With all the characters you can go anywhere and do anything, but there is always something that you have to do to 'win' the scenario. With Lute, all it seems you can do is fight one character to progress passed his story. There are no other quests Lute must perform thus making his level extremely boring as for the most part you are simply grinding and trying to make him powerful enough to win. The combat was different too, sometimes being innovative is a good thing and results in some really exciting new game play, but here it kind of blows as does the leveling. I hear it is worse in a later game in this series...I believe it is in either Unlimited or Romancing. The characters look right out of the 8 or 16 bit era, but that is kind of cool, the thing that kills this game is the fact at times it is a bit to random and open ended. This feature and the leveling completely negate the positives of the game like the old school look and the backgrounds. Could of been better, could of been worse, as is it is neither.
