Review of Act of Valor

Act of Valor (2012)
Extra level of interest because real Navy Seals played the parts.

Warning: Spoilers
This is an unusual experiment for a movie but it works really well, considering that most of the characters are playing themselves, as Navy Seals, in situations in a fictional story. At least we know that what we see is pretty close to what really goes into the planning and execution of a Seals mission.

There are two stories here. The first is an extraction of a female US agent who has been captured and in the process of being tortured for information. It is graphic, included simulated drilling of holes in her hands with an electric drill. The team's mission to extract her introduces us to them and how they work as a team.

The second is a potentially much more serious issue, an international smuggler is involved in helping to transport perhaps 2 dozen special vests, with ceramic ball bearings which, when exploded using suicide agents, would cause mass casualties in public places. Stadiums, shopping malls, even the White House. They must invade a town on the Mexico/USA border to intercept the smugglers as they prepare to go into a series of tunnels.

The action is extreme and graphic. The acting and dialog as one might expect is somewhat sub-par compared to professional actors, but it works and adds a certain realism to it.

I enjoyed it.
