Ruby Sparks (2012)

Should have gone for all out comedy, or completely serious
3 November 2012
Calvin Weir-Fields, a successful novelist is stuck alone in real life and searching for inspiration for his next book. He dreams of a woman and starts writing about her, calling her Ruby Sparks. He is utterly flabbergasted to find his creation come to life, complete with her back- story and utterly oblivious to the fact that she's a character created by Calvin.

He retains control of her life, thoughts and emotions - whatever he writes into his manuscript reflects true in reality. So he has created a woman out of thin air (or thin paper, if you want) and hilarity ensues.

Except, no, wait - hilarity DOESN'T ensue. This is a romantic comedy- drama, which purports to have a realistic/ grounded approach to how the author handles the situation. It's like Weird Science, except the movie tries to take itself seriously. In that respect, it's a bit closer to Will Ferrel's 'Stranger than Fiction', another critically acclaimed movie that simply didn't make any sense to me.

Once the author accepts the premise of having conjured up the character and breathed life into her, he just plain accepts it without question. There is never a quest to learn why this has happened, whether his other characters from other books have come to life without his knowing, whether this is actually a woman conjured from nowhere or if he is somehow mind-controlling some existing person, whether... well, basically, he chooses to ignore hundreds of obvious questions that would have popped into the average head.

I think they should either have gone with a serious, no-nonsense philosophical look into how this would play out in real life, or should have gone for wacky, all-nonsense hilarity like a modern Weird Science. Right now, it seems stuck between the two.

The movie poster is far more creative than the entire movie, and the tag-line is pretty cool - "She's out of his mind". But it's still good for a one time watch.
