Review of SoltyRei

SoltyRei (2005–2006)
7/10
An enjoyable anime with a dramatic mood change half way through

Warning: Spoilers
Set twelve years after a world changing event known as the 'Blast Fall' this series follows bounty hunter Roy Revant whose wife was killed and daughter vanished in the Blast Fall. His life is changed when a green haired girl literally falls out of the sky and saves his life. She starts to follow him despite his protestations and eventually he adopts her and gives her the name Solty. It soon becomes apparent that she isn't like other girls; she is incredibly strong as she is a robot although she doesn't know this as she has lost all memories of her life before she met Roy. As the series progresses they have run-ins with thief Rose Anderson and her brothers and the RUC (the world government/police). Early episodes are fairly light-hearted but things get much darker half way through when some major characters are killed leaving Roy despondent and Solty walking off into the desert. In the remaining episodes they must come back together and in what will turn into a literal struggle to save humanity!

I picked up this series because it was cheap and ended up really enjoying it despite being unsure about Solty's character design; her hair is strange even by anime standards! The characters are interesting as is their situation. Early on there are some laughs which serves to make the tragic events hit harder. There are a few good twists which do actually come as a surprise rather than being expected. It does contain some material that might not be suitable for younger viewers; there is some blood spilt and a fair amount of fan service… mostly in the form of close ups of Solty's backside which is clothed in trousers that are very tight but also includes more than one shower scene. Over all I'd say this series is well worth watching; especially if being sold at a lower than usual price.

The series is twenty six episodes long but the final two are OVA episodes that take place between episodes nine and ten and I would recommend watching them there; I watched them after episode twenty four, which is the real finale, and was surprised to see characters who I thought were dead! These comments are based on watching the series in Japanese with English subtitles.
