Very insightful on what the Bible has to really say.
23 June 2013
This film was released in 2007 as a documentary basically on what the Bible has to say on homosexuality. The documentary focuses on a handful of individuals and their families and talks over what their religious background is and what it was like for the individual to "come out of the closet" and face their family in a different way. The film also featured segments from speeches by political leaders or from political cartoons back in the day that opposed GBLT people and excluded them from society.

This film was quite interesting since I knew about how "the bible says" GBLT is wrong and how those people should be looked down upon and excluded from society. What I did not know prior to watching this film was how intensified it was in the 80's and 90's. The film gave me valuable insight on how people fired at the GBLT people and practically pushed them out of society. With different individuals from different backgrounds, it was interesting to see how they all viewed their sexual orientation before and after coming out to their parents. One thing that all individuals and families had in common was that they were religious in one way or another and that they were all unsure about whether they should come out or not because of how they have been taught about homosexuality in church or other religious places.

After watching this documentary, I learned how inaccurate it was to directly quote the bible for saying LGBT is a sin or those who are LGBT should be excluded from society. The film gave me insight on how those who are excluding the LGBT people may actually be at a worse standing point compared to those who are actually LGBT since they are going against Gods unconditional love. Not loving everybody for who they are is considered sinful and therefore you are not being a faithful follower of what God has to say. I also learned how many people misquote things by disregarding the contextual aspect of it. One Bible quote says "You shall note lie with a man as with a woman; it is abomination" (Leviticus 18:22). People misunderstand the meaning of abomination and defines it as "sent to hell" or "go to hell". Abomination in a general sense means ritually unclean or not customary. This film told me not only on the religious level but also in a societal level how quotes are so misused and that we must be aware of what we say.

Overall, this film was really interesting for me to watch and learn. It gave me a more full understand of what the Bible has to say about LGBT and how those who are religious, must over come their fears and face the world, regardless of what the consequence may be.

I would recommend this film to those who want to know "the truth" behind what the Bible has to say or for those who are just simply wondering what people are referencing to in the Bible.
