How Could Have This Been Made So Awful?
2 September 2013
Warning: Spoilers
A little background: just before Peter Sellers died, he had signed to reprise his role as Inspector Clouseau once more in the planned movie "The Romance Of The Pink Panther", which of course never materialized. Presumably this cartoon, which has a theme of romance, was meant to go along with it.

The cartoon's story is about how the Pink Panther sees romance all around him and daydreams of getting a lady panther for himself. When a costumed singing and dancing deliveryman gives him a package containing heart-decorated women's lingerie, obviously not destined for him, he goes to the company to return it-and then decides to get a job at the establishment, presumably to make money to get himself a date.

So what went wrong? When the Pink Panther makes his deliveries, all sorts of bad things happen; he inadvertently causes a fight between a wife and her husband, he inadvertently causes a musician to smash his beloved violin, he is a courier of a bomb to a mobster, who goes after him in revenge. Yes, in a number of past cartoons, the Pink Panther does cause inadvertent trouble for people, but it is done in a humorous way, and builds up tension in the story. Here, he causes trouble for people, and instead of being humorous, it is just painful and mean- spirited, even though the Pink Panther was not acting with malicious intentions.

This could have been made into a funny cartoon, but the results certainly weren't. A tremendous embarrassment.
