Review of Up the River

Up the River (1930)
7/10
A curiosity
3 June 2014
A curious picture directed by the amazing John Ford. This was 1930 and the talking motion picture was in its infancy. And unfortunately this film had apparently deteriorated quite a bit before preservation for modern day film lovers. Too bad because it is the first starring role for both Humphrey Bogart and Spencer Tracy, two giants of the silver screen in later years. This would be the only time they would ever work together. The movie's not so wonderful, the bits of comedy fall flat as comedy was not John Ford's specialty. But as I said, it's a curious picture and one most definitely worth watching.
