FOUR STAR PLAY HOUSE – Desert Encounter – 1956

Charles Boyer headlines this episode of the top flight anthology series, FOUR STAR PLAYHOUSE. This series ran for 130 episodes between 1952 and 1956. Each week, one of either, Dick Powell, Charles Boyer, David Niven or Ida Lupino would be the lead in the episode. This one is episode is 48 of the series.

Charles Boyer is a famous playwright spending some time south of the border to finish his new play. He decides to drive to LA to attend a writer's convention. He stops at a small service station to fuel up and have a coffee break. At the next table, a young couple, Stuart Whitman and Susan Kohner are having a loud argument. Kohner tells Whitman that her father and brothers will kill him if he does not do the right thing.

His car fuelled up, Boyer prepares to continue his drive to LA. Just as he pulls out, Kohner approaches and asks for a ride up the highway to her father's ranch. Boyer agrees and the two drive off.

They reach the ranch and are met by Kohner's father, Martin Garralaga, and two brothers, Pepe Hern and Richard Lopez. Boyer is somewhat surprised when he is hustled inside the house and locked in a room with Kohner.

Kohner explains that Boyer needs to marry her or he will be killed. Kohner had been stepping out with Whitman and the family honour is now at risk. She must be married. Whitman was most reluctant on this score. Kohner had simply picked Boyer as a fill in to save Whitman from her family.

Needless to say, Boyer is not the least bit happy with this idea either. He is saved however when Whitman shows up with a priest. He has decided to make an honest woman out of Kohner. A relieved Boyer slips away and is soon back on the road to LA.
