Food Stamped (2010)
4/10
Challenge-based food doc
14 December 2014
Warning: Spoilers
The plot is pretty typical of the copy-cat genre spawned from the eponymous SuperSize Me documentary, they setup a challenge with ground rules and they gather some brief input from nutritionists at the end (albeit a week long challenge doesn't seem long enough for a full feature documentary). In between the 'struggles' they film during their tiny challenge, they cover a myriad of community and social subject matter relating to poverty and obesity. The food bank story and food stamp application process were perhaps the only things that I hadn't already seen in the other copy-cat documentaries, however they were based in CA only. It would have been more interesting to see an evaluation of the food stamp program across multiple states, but maybe they only had a food stamp production budget. The one thing that irks me is that during the filming of the final meal in the challenge, the sabbath meal, I noticed that they were all drinking wine..so they were cheating which makes me question the truthfulness of the rest of their 'challenges' met while sticking to a ' food stamp budget'.
