Aspen Extreme (1993)
7/10
The Best Ski Movie (That's Not Saying Much)
2 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Virtually every other ski movie is a corny comedy, but this is a semi-corny attempt at a drama (probably a dramaedy, though that concept was in its infancy in the early 90s). I rate this as the best 'scripted ski movie', which is to say that Hot Dog, Ski School, etc. are OK popcorn flicks, but this is the best of the lot. My rating is with those films in mind. The plot is a tropy/cliché mix of bromance/sports action/love quadrangle, but you do end up rooting for the chief protagonist in the end.

There are some moments of embarrassingly bad dialogue (the pool scene is so soapy, it should be a bubble bath) and plot (the laughable hole in the slope = "crevasse" = noooooooooo scene), but that is to be expected. And of course, every serious skier knows that very little of the movie was filmed in Aspen (BC and Alta shout-out). Regardless, it's an acceptable way to kill 2 hours of your time.
