Rome: An Owl in a Thornbush (2005)
Season 1, Episode 3

Caesar nears Rome
28 January 2016
Warning: Spoilers
The speed of Caesar's march south shocks Pompey; he may have three legions to Caesar's one but they are made up of raw recruits and veterans of Caesar's campaign in Gaul whose loyalty might not be guaranteed. Unsure that he can hold the city he orders that the senate and all loyal noblemen evacuate to the south from where they will rally loyal forces and counter-attack in the spring. Before news of the evacuation is announced people loyal to Pompey surround Atia's villa and those inside prepare to kill themselves if the doors give way. Meanwhile Lucius Vorenus and Titus Pullo approach Rome with a scouting party; on the way the run into a group of soldiers trying to take most of the treasury out of the city.

This was another solid episode and things are really starting to happen as Caesar's forces near Rome and Pompey and his allies evacuate. While there isn't a huge amount of action there is some; notably when the scouting party fight a group of soldiers who have stolen the treasury and when Atia has Timon kill her daughter's husband; there is also some tension as the mob loyal to Pompey attack Atia's villa… after that it was fun watching former Pompey loyalists who were remaining in the city coming crawling to her claiming to be friends. There is also some enjoyable bonding between Vorenus and Pullo as the former asks his friend for advice on what to do to get Niobe to love him again.
