True Blood: In the Beginning (2012)
Season 5, Episode 7
Something About This Really Rubs Me The Wrong Way!
11 September 2016
I am a huge TRUE BLOOD fan, I loved the first season and I thought that Season Six was amazingly effective and a full-scale comeback. (I'm watching out of order because I'm poor and have to check DVD's out of the library.)

Well, after Six I went backwards to Five, and it wasn't nearly as good. Something just wasn't right. It wasn't just the way Tara, a strong black woman, becomes a groveling submissive the minute a pretty blonde starts giving her orders. And it wasn't just the way the werewolves are always, always being stereotyped as trailer park trash. And it wasn't even the disastrous Terry arc, which recycles all the most hateful Vietnam era stereotypes about the military, with kill-crazed Iraq vets being hunted by a "smoke monster."

No, the breaking point is where campy Russell Edgington and his vampire friends get hopped up on Lilith's blood, go out on a rampage, and murder an entire wedding party at some small hotel. And the entire scene is played . . . for laughs. For laughs!

How come when Russell and his friends kill people we're supposed to laugh, but when Terry and his Marine pals kill Iraqi civilians that's pure evil? Is it some kind of gay revenge fantasy? How come hate crimes are only wrong when it's those ignorant straight people doing it . . . and not civilized people "like us?"

TRUE BLOOD is a show that has really lost its way.
