World War one love story
25 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
SPOILERS -- Helen Twelvetrees is Elsa Elsbergen, in Austria at the opening of World War One. She tries to sign up to assist at the hospital, but is refused. She is spotted and recruited by a general, who uses her to flush out a wanted criminal, Otto von Lichstein (Lew Cody). They use a blurry image to simulate letting us in on her thoughts, but the image is SO blurry, its just annoying. Along the way, she meets, and falls for, Count Karl Runyi (William Bakewell), a lieutenant in the navy. Of course, that leads to trouble. and a duel. Some big names in here... Zasu Pitts (the maid), H.B. Warner (a major), and of course, Frank Pangborn (navy sailor)! Directed by Harry Brown, who had started directing and producing films in the silent days. Story by John Farrow... Mia Farrow's father! Farrow had won an Oscar for Around the World in 80 Days. Good entertainment. The age on the TCM copy is showing... the sound quality is a little shaggy, but it's still fun to watch. Bravery, duty, love, and sacrifice. Didn't end well in real life for Helen T... she offed herself at 49. Had a good ten years in H-wood.
