Orange is the New Black surpasses the typical TV shows as it gives the audience something different to watch. The second episode of Orange is the New Black focuses on a different person in prison, from the first episode so it's not always portraying one main character, it changes every episode. This is great because it gives insight to the different characters lives and the reason why they ended up in prison. The whole series focus on real-life inmates so it gives people a different view into what really happens behind closed doors (prison life) and the different stories of how people ended up in prison. However it feels like when the episode is telling someone's story it drags before it gets to the persons backstory. The flashbacks where incorporated well throughout the show giving understanding. Kate Mulgrew's portrayal of 'Red' was nicely executed, especially in the flashback when we see her trying to be accepted into the 'Russian women/wife' group and the things she went through for other people.
