What you have heard about Depp's performance is true, he is AMAZING in this movie. Probably his best role since the 90's. However, this movie doesn't have a interesting supporting cast or a well structured narrative to make this good.
The main problem is how serious this movie takes itself. There are no jokes or funny situations during the 2 hour run time. That's fine, a serious movie is not a bad movie, but the reason Goodfellas is a masterpiece is because it has interesting characters. The crime genre needs likable characters to make you interested in what's going on.
Edgerton is not a good actor, Cumberbatch is barely in the movie and everybody else is so forgettable that I can't remember anybody's name. And the jump in time are so sudden that you never realize when something it's supposed to be happening between 1975-1985.
It's ¨Black mass¨ a bad movie?, yeah, its uninteresting, filled with boring characters and lacks the sexiness and excitement of the best mafia based stories, and if the source material doesn't have it, then don't adapt it.
