WrestleMania X (1994 TV Special)
5/10
Good Matches, But No "Future In It"
6 March 2017
Smack dab in the middle of the "Bret Hart Era" of the WWF, Wrestlemania X manages to pull off a rare feat: despite having very few wrestlers who ended up having truly bright futures for the company, this event features some pretty good technical matches.

My personal highlights included...

-The Hart brothers (Bret & Owen) square of in a passionate technical battle. Maybe the best match of the whole card right from the get-go. -Doink and Dink...just fun for the pure comedy standpoint! -Both matches featuring Yokozuna, who may have been the best "big man" in the history of WWF (easily to that point). -Randy Savage and Crush put on a pretty good show (a precursor of many "No Holds Barred" matches to come). -The celebrated inaugural ladder match between Shawn Michaels and Razor Ramon. It looks "tame" by today's standards, but this was the match that started it all.

Despite those great matches, however, the problem with this event is the extreme over-hyping of Lex Luger as the "new hero" of the WWF. While as a child I bought in hook, line, and sinker, I think most adults at the time probably realized that Luger wasn't going to be the next WWF savior like he was touted. I'm pretty sure he was out of the company (or if not, certainly not still in championship running) by the time the next WM rolled around. Like the Ultimate Warrior, Luger proved unable to carry the mantle of WWF headliner (though I suppose one could argue it was a tough torch to bear, what the "Attitude Era" looming and perceptions of professional wrestling changing very quickly).

Overall, Wrestlemania X is a decent event with some excellent technical matches. Just don't expect the story lines to suck you in.
