If game shows and pro wrestling had a baby...
9 July 2017
Back in 2014, friends and youtubers, Kristian Harloff & Mark Ellis had an idea. They loved movies, they loved sports and they wanted to combine the two. They came up with the idea of a movie trivia competition which would borrow elements from combat sports and sports entertainment (mma & pro wrestling). They brought the characters and the colour and the story lines and with the "Ultimate Schmoedown" created a tournament that was great fun to watch. Fast forward and the Schmoedown has evolved into a fully fledged league. Many competitors drawn from the world of YouTube critics, movie bloggers and online personalities have competed in the Schmoedown and it only continues to grow in size, scale and popularity. Consisting of a singles league, a team league and an innergeekdom division, matches are posted on Youtube each Tuesday and Friday. In the last year or so they have started to organize larger, "pay-per- view" style events, such as the recent "Collider Collision" which had two #1 contenders matches and two championship matches including a triple threat match for the singles title between Mark "Yodi" Reilly (incumbent champion and senior writer for Collider video), John "The Outlaw" Rocha (fmr champ, actor and host of the Ciniphiles podcast) and "Dangerous" Dan Murrell (fmr champ, senior writer and critic for Screen Junkies).

I'll conclude by saying that although the show maintains "kayfabe" (a pro wrestling term meaning the illusion of reality), the matches themselves are all "shoot" contests, that is to say that the matches are not rigged or predetermined like pro wrestling is !!
