Underratted For Sure
2 May 2018
I saw this completely on a whim... it was playing on TV and my wife wanted me to see it with her. I am glad about the circumstances around which we watched the film, because if I had seen any of the reviews beforehand, I would not have seen it.

This film, surprisingly, got a lot of hate. Much of it is because of the story, for sure, but a lot of the audience distate is because -I suspect- they couldn't get themselves to empathize with such an awkward, and at time annoying, lead character. Plauidits are due here for Ms. Bullock's choice in going against type.

Her preformance walked a fine tightrope between awkwardness and the endearing, with a delicate touch of humor. I have never read about, or seen another film about, a crossword puzzle designer. The parallels drawn between the art of the word and life comprise the main themes in this entertaining "chick flick" which will also make guys laugh. Althought this will be a far cry, I hope the film is re-discovered in posterity. Many films that were flops found their audieces, like True Romance, which now has gone the other direction and I believe is over-hyped.
