Mike Leigh has directed and devised two famous Play for Today presentations. Abigail's Party and Nuts in May. Both of them feature his then wife, Alison Steadman in the lead role.

Nuts in May is a black comedy about two obnoxious and self righteous characters Keith (Roger Sloman) and Candice-Marie (Alison Steadman) who go camping in Dorset. They want some peace and quiet but cannot abide other human beings especially if they have fun such as listening to the radio or want to have some nookie. However they are not averse to unleashing their song and music to others.

Keith is a civil servant and a bit of a know it all. Candice-Marie comes across as a bit simple. They really are a right pair. Given it was made in 1976, some of their new age views would had made them to be crackpots at the time but surprisingly their views on the environment and vegetarianism now make them appear to be ahead of the curve.

Like other Leigh productions, this is semi improvised. Not a lot happens but you just see two selfish people who cannot function with other people nearby. Roger Sloman gives an outstanding performance.
