This is a rather interesting movie. Everything about this movie is either incredible and creative or bland and forgettable. First, the good. The world it's set in is beautiful and creative. It's kind of like a mix of James Cameron's Avatar and Breath of the Wild, only not as much as either of those. It has the diverse array of fascinating creatures like Avatar, and the monolithic guardians and scale of Breath of the Wild. Actually, the more I think about, the more it seems like a lost Zelda game. (for the record, this came out before BotW). The idea of having the large creatures pulling the Sun and Moon on their paths was interesting, and actually quite beautiful. Some of the creatures are fascinating, like Glim and the candle-people. Even aside from them, the character designs are very creative. The way it alters between 3D and classic hand-drawn animation is always welcome, as it is done very well. The dream world, while a concept done in movies before, was done very well here, especially how the visuals contrasted with the real world.
And, the bad. Remember that beautiful world? It doesn't have a name. May as well call it Pandora. Second: the characters. There's Mune himself, the guy who stumbles into a great quest and becomes the hero by the end, Shohone, the hotshot, Glim, the love interest, and Necross, the generic big bad. These are characters that could have been copy-pasted out of any Disney first draft. They're not interesting at all. Possibly the worst examples are Necross' lackeys. They're exactly like Pain and Panic from Disney's Hercules. They even look like them. The story is also not as interesting as it could have been, given the creativity of the premise. It's a bland story where the new guy comes in and proves his worth against the doubters and other evildoers. All in all, this is quite the mixed bag. Does the good outweigh the bad? I'd call it even. It definitely gets points for creativity.
