Ken Russell meets Michele Soavi as A priest battles a demon that kills sinners in the act of sinning.
The Unholy is a paranormal investigation thriller where a priest goes through satanic strip clubs, gets thrown out of a twelve story window and battles some sexy demon woman at the end of it all.
The Unholy is a unexceptional Exorcist rip off with some exceptional practical effects. The gore is quite entertaining and when things go crazy, there is sincere intent to push for that R rating which i appreciated.
The cast is fine and make their characters engaging. The problem lies with the screenplay, which for the demon possession sub-genre is very atypical and added nothing original, even for 1988.
Luckily though, everything is shot in primary colours and the film has a baroque atmosphere lying throughout. Even if the plot is nothing special, it is indeed made engaging by the striking, fitting visuals.
There is not much else i can say about the Unholy except that it is a really stylish, reasonably paced demon possession film. It is an unambitious slice of late 80's horror and i recommend it to Exorcist fans and this oddly shaped window in genre film history.
