How to be taken seriously as a filmmaker when your favorite comedy is Problem Child 2?
13 February 2019
Ah, Problem Child 2... one of my favorite films as a kid, teen and even today as an adult. I love it and it cracks me up like nothing else, short of the films of John Waters.

Problem Child 2 is crude, immature, twisted and hilarious. Lorraine Newman as Lawanda Dumore, the man deprived succubus from the south, is hysterical; my favorite moment being when her ego drives her to believe she can stop a boulder rolling towards her ala Raiders of the Lost Ark by proclaiming "I Command You to Stop!" before being subsuquently flattened.

Amy Yasbeck is also amazing, pulling a total 180 from her character Flo in the first Problem Child, radiating warmth and maternity. Junior amps it up here and has really taken his love for terrorizing people who screw with him to another level, going from writing love letters to serial killers, to attempted murder, orchestrating voyeristic sex tapes of the babysitter, and tricking the Dept. Of Health into thinking his future stepmother is rabid.

The movie is from '91 which means, it has an epically cheesy soundtrack from the death rattle of hair metal, which I love, and ends sweetly with a parent trap like collusion between Junior and his fellow sociopathic sidekick, Trixie, a 7 year old frenemie who loves to play with explosives and heavy machinery. As a former problem child myself, this film will always be my favorite and I will stand by it until the end of time!!

*Fun Fact for any film snobs currently shaking their heads after reading this:

The two scribes of Problem Child I and II, Larry and Scott, went on to next write Ed Wood for Tim Burton, before helming such bio-pic classics as The People vs Larry Flynt, Man on the Moon, Big Eyes, Dolemite is My Name and American Crime Story: The People vs OJ for Ryan Murphy. FACE.
