Review of Fear Itself

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Fear Itself (1999)
Season 4, Episode 4
10/10
A Halloween episode which provides both scares and laughs
1 April 2019
It is Halloween again and one of the fraternity houses is throwing a 'haunted house' party; unfortunately one of the decorations is a symbol copied from a book on demons. The party is inevitably going to be much scarier than planned. Initially Buffy isn't keen to attend as she is still upset after what happened with Parker but turns up, dressed as Little Red Riding Hood, and joins Willow, Oz and Xander. They enter the house and things quickly get scary; something is causing everybody's fears to become real. Anya arrives slightly late, by then the house's door has vanished and as she looks a window similarly disappears, so she goes to get help from Giles.

This was a top quality episode; the haunted house contained elements that are genuinely scary at times. This includes some fairly gruesome items by the standard of the show. It also provides some funny moments; particularly at the episode's conclusion. The scares are nicely varied as they relate to each person's fears so Buffy feels abandoned, Willow imagines her magic going wrong etc. Other highlights, which I won't describe in too much detail are Anya's choice of 'scary' costume and Giles entrance to the house at the end of the film. It must be admitted that the final confrontation isn't scary... it is however very funny. Overall a really enjoyable episode.
