Nice Throwback to Another Era
16 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Aging and retired private eye Harry Ross (Paul Newman) is living with a couple of former Hollywood stars (Gene Hackman & Susan Sarandon) after bringing their runaway daughter (Reese Witherspoon) back from Mexico. When something is dug up from the past, Ross is forced to go back to work one more time and find out which skeletons belong in which closets. Along the way he runs across a former partner with the police, and old flame (Stockard Channing) and a former studio security chief (James Garner) who had helped him in the past.

A relaxed pace, lots of quiet scenes. Subtle with a wry sense of humor. A throwback in terms of style and content to the late 60's or early 70's, with a nice evocative score by Elmer Bernstein and a look to the cinematography that fits.

Features some very low key and restrained performances with the lone exception to the rule being Giancarlo Esposito. Lots of interesting conversations if not quite brilliant dialogue.

There is an important subtext about growing old (see the title), one of the characters has terminal cancer, there are conversations about prostates and several of the characters have quit drinking or smoking or both. But I guess that's to be expected with a 73 year old romantic lead.
