Review of Blue Hawaii

Blue Hawaii (1961)
6/10
Some Good Scenery and a Couple of Good Songs
5 May 2019
Having just finished a 2-year term of service in Europe for the United States Army, "Chad Gates" (Elvis Presley) has now come back to his home state of Hawaii and wants to pick up exactly where he left off. His girlfriend "Maile Duval" (Joan Blackman) is also anxious to see him again as well. However, even though Chad dearly loves them, he is not nearly as thrilled to see his mother "Sarah Lee Gates" (Angela Lansbury) or his father "Fred Gates" (Roland Winters) as they are much too determined to dictate his future for him-and Maile doesn't fit into Sarah Lee's plans at all. Now rather than reveal any more I will just say that this was a decent "Elvis movie" which had more than its fair share of songs to include a couple of big hits in "Can't Help Falling in Love" and the "Hawaiian Wedding Song". Likewise, having the beautiful scenery of Hawaii in the background certainly didn't hurt this film either. That being said, while it may not be the best Elvis picture ever produced it was certainly enjoyable enough and for that reason, I have rated it accordingly. Slightly above average.
