Killing Eve (2018–2022)
10/10
A stylish spy drama that's totally killing it
6 June 2019
This is the kind of original content with strong female leads that us women have long been looking for but have seen very few thus far. Killing Eve takes all the formulaic patterns of the spy genre and turns it on its head, not by assigning these roles that were usually meant for their male counterparts or female for that matter (think sexy assassins in tight leather outfits and all) to solely women but by re-writing the perspectives of how the story is told. This is largely thanks in part to the phenomenally talented Phoebe Waller-Bridge, whose humor I couldn't get enough of in Fleabag has been aptly translated and infused enough into the writing here which paints its two leads as multi-faceted and relatable.

I've sped through S1 and S2 and although evidently there has been a change in the showrunner, the essence of the show remains which hopefully stays intact in S3. The change of pace in S2 adds a fresh dimension to how S1 unfolded and I'm excited to see how the new writer will play with the dynamics of the show.

Of course this review isn't complete without the rightful singing of high praises for the two leads of the show. Without them, the writing wouldn't have carried through. Sandra Oh is as always, fabulous as Eve, bringing a relatable air to the character of which viewers can easily access. However, the true MVP of the show would be Jodie Comer. Someone I knew nothing about before the show has now become my favorite actress. She has elevated a character far beyond iconic, adding a tangible depth to an already stellar script. Her dexterity in switching between accents and between playful-ness and serious psychopatic assassin mode is quite frankly scary and genius all at the same time. I've never felt a varying degree of emotions with one character alone as much as I've had with Villanelle. Comer has been wrongfully snubbed by the awards show circuit last year but with the show exponentially gaining in popularity in a span of a year, I'm certain her recognition will come soon.
