Mission: Impossible: Invasion (1971)
Season 6, Episode 9

Excellent and exciting; a classic-style MI adventure

In Seasons 6 and 7, the show focused on dealing with criminals in the USA, with few foreign trips. This saved on costs by not having to "create" so many foreign (usually East European) countries, but a negative side effect for many fans is that we got so many stories about fighting "the syndicate," that is, organized crime. It was a case of "geez, the Mob again???" In this episode, we get a welcome change, as the MI team tackles a tough traitor who wants to betray USA defenses. Kevin McCarthy does a fine job as usual, as the bad guy. Unspecified East Europeans (read: Russkies) are unflinchingly portrayed as ruthless and evil. No John Le Carre-style moral murkiness here! With our MI team set at four in Seasons 6 and 7, Willy often gets more to do than in earlier seasons, both action and dialogue. Lynda Day George again shows that she is a very good MI team member. To me, she's very believable as an intelligence agent. Peter Graves and Greg Morris are outstanding, as they usually are. Fans of MI will enjoy this one. The episode structure is a bit different than usual, but in a good way. Get out the popcorn!
