"I'm Ready For the Novel"
1 August 2019
I'm always hesitant with movies about writers and particularly 'writers block'. It always feels like a cheap way to tell a story, though it's most likely the exact opposite. Happythankyoumoreplease sees Josh Radnor behind the camera for his feature film directorial debut, but also in front of the camera as one of many characters on the verge of a 'coming of age' story and going through a significant life change. And while it's an interesting watch, the film almost feels eerily similar to the type of writer his character is. It's parts are far greater than the movie as a whole, and Radnor's character is a writer who seemingly can't do better than a short story. There's really good work here from Kate Mara, Zoe Kazan, Pablo Schreiber, and Malin Akerman. However, there are a few things far too frustrating about Radnor's character to forgive, which makes for someone hard to root for.
