The Crocotta is one of the more striking monsters on the show and its brand of psychological torment is especially effective. The cold open of the episode is some of the most chilling material in season 3. The core of the story about Dean thinking John is still alive is interesting but this episode comes far too late in continuity.
Most of Dean's overt daddy issues were largely processed in season 2; the few that weren't got worked out in a few episodes earlier in Dream a Little Dream of Me. It strains credulity that Dean so readily falls for the Crocotta's trick. He was passed this sort of blind faith in John by the time this episode occurred. If this was in the beginning of season 3 it would be a lot better.
