Wolves (2014)

This is one of those films that starts off by being narrated by its teenage hero, just like Zombieland or Stakeland, not really my style. Anyway this teen (actually played by then 24 year old Lucas Till) has a problem - when angry he unleashes superhuman strength, when he makes out with his girlfriend he turns into a werewolf and kills her. And he also appears to have butchered his parents, but has no recollection. In search of answers he heads off to Lupine Range, a place that sounds like somewhere in one of the Howling movies. As werewolf movies go this is pretty average. The plot is simple and predictable but sufficient to maintain interest. There is plenty of action, it never gets boring. The CGI effects are not great, but I've seen far worse. Jason Momoa as the lead baddie was very good, he certainly has plenty of on screen presence. What I did not like is the fact that on one hand this movie is pretty nasty, for example one scene has a young woman being viciously beaten by two bikers. But on the other hand the script contains many funny one liners, such as "What's more Halloween than getting eaten by a wolfman?", or the one quoted in my headline. Left me a tad confused as to what the makers intended, straight horror or comedy/horror? Wolves is no Howling (1981) but at the same time it's as good as some of the sequels and I felt reasonably satisfied when the end credits rolled.
