Hekimoglu (2019–2021)

House M.D vs Hekimoglu

Warning: Spoilers
One cannot divorce this adaptation from the original, House M.D. So there always will be a comparison between two, which is quite natural. And I'm a fan of House M.D, but I gotta say there are lots of things that bother me watching this.

Firstly, I gotta give Okan Yalabik his due, he is a great actor and he is one of the reasons I kept watching. Other reason was the curiosity, because obviously it's an adaptation of one of my favorites. Also I'm taking a Film Studies class this term where we're studying movie adaptations.

There was a point where our lecturer told us that the adaptations may be 10-15 minutes longer or shorter because there could be some additions or omissions. But I still can't understand how an adaptation of a series that has around 40-minute long episodes could have around 2-hour long episodes. What is with the additions? How is this even possible?

I'm dying a little bit inside every time the overly dramatic hospital soap opera pops up in the series, because House M.D was mocking with them, but Hekimoglu is one of them. Oh the irony.

And don't get me started with the product placement. Seriously this is Kanal D, one of the biggest TV channels in Turkey. How much money do they take to make themselves irritable as hell? I cringed at my own being watching that product placement.

Also what's with the Ebru Ozkan who's playing the Lisa Cuddy role? Why is she trying to look exactly like her? That hairdo was from early 2000's, and it looks ridiculous now. You didn't need to copy everything one by one. This is an adaptation not a knockoff.

Honestly the dialogues especially from first a few episodes reeked clumsy translations and bad localization. It got better but at what cost? Now at later episodes there is the "classic Kanal D overly dramatic scenes" addition. Why can't you just let me enjoy this show?

My biggest disappointment was the money. I've worked on 4 different short movie sets and it was hard as hell. But this is a professionally produced series from one of the biggest TV channels of Turkey and they even miss some elementary points like objective correlative, coherence, unity and decent acting.

Lastly I couldn't let it go without telling you how much I hate the classic Kanal D camera movement and zooms especially during the stressful conversations. Watching this series was an experience of masochism.
