Review of Reckless

Reckless (2013)
6/10
A straight forward public service caution with an overemphasis on sex
18 April 2020
Hard to know what to say about this one.

Where I struggle is that the movie doesn't seem to be about anything other than what's going on on the surface. It's like one of those ads we used to have in Australia warning people about making sure their kids don't stick knives in power points, or road safety ads telling you not to drink and drive. It depicts a poor decision made by a character, and the tragic outcome of that decision. And then it's over.

A movie with such a clear-cut message doesn't really invite further analysis, and nor will I remember watching it for much longer.

I keep reading the word "controversial" used in connection with it, wherever it is actually mentioned. I don't see how or why it would be controversial. Perhaps if this had been made in America, the brief scene of child nudity at the beginning of the film might ruffle some feathers, but what else? Yeah, there's a sex scene, but it's not really graphic. The people who actually watch short films from Scandinavia at festivals or whatever have certainly seen worse.
