Visually Attractive Mess of a Story
2 August 2020
Beautifully cinematography.....minus the multitude of slow motion shots that appear to be filmed at 20fps.

The film's biggest flaw is the completely befuddled storyline. The movie is clearly supposed to be about The Grandmaster (Ip Man) but there's virtually no development to his character, not to mention the second half of the movie is about his female rival, Gong, who essentially overtakes him as the main character. You learn about her background and life and future and have sympathy for her etc.....and then The Grandmaster just kind of makes an appearance at the end and is the exact same person from the beginning so I really dont know what the Director was thinking.....especially considering the apparent fact that this movie spent 10 years in production.

Regardless, it's well worth watching. In addition to it looking very nice, I appreciated the pacing and attention to displays of emotion that contrasted the fight scenes. Ultimately it held my attention throughout the duration of the film. It'd be nice if there was a spin-off about Gong. Her character was by far the most interesting aspect of this film.

I award it a 68.5%
