The Mandalorian: Chapter 13: The Jedi (2020)
Season 2, Episode 5
10/10
Dave Filoni - Heir to the throne

Warning: Spoilers
From the first scene until the last my jaw was hanging down to the floor. Dave Filoni worked for years with George Lucas and it really shows here. This episode is a perfect blend of old school samurai and western films - from the choreography to the themes and the story line.

Ahsoka Tano is a character that wasn't always loved by the Star Wars fandom but eventually she grew into her own and became one of the most popular characters of all time not just animated but in general. This episode depicting her in live action form is no exception. No matter if you've watched her since 2008 or if you've just been watching Mandalorian since it's debut last season this character of the Jedi is one that anyone can be invested in. There is no prior knowledge needed to become interested but if the viewer has been following from the beginning this episode is an epic conclusion (for now) to one of the most beloved characters of all time.

Dave Filoni has really grown into his own with his live action direction since his debut of Mandalorian season 1. His animation career is nothing short of outstanding but episode 5 of the last season which he helmed was definitely regarded as the least favorite entry of the series, however that is not the case with his immaculate direction this episode. With a final dual that closely resembles Kurosawa's Throne of Blood, the tightly nit storytelling for this episode really feels as though the filmmaker has taken the criticism from his last venture and worked hard to improve.

Rosario Dawson has always resembled the facial structure of Ahsoka but her acting and choreography gives the character an emotional and physical gravitas unlike any Star Wars character. The references to Anakin, Yoda, and Order 66 really tie the entire universe together and made myself personally filled with glee. Backstory given to the child (now known as Grogu) and the name drop of another of the most riveting Star Wars character (GRAND ADMIRAL THRAWN) is enough to make any Star Wars fan wet the bed.

This show continues to excite the fandom and expand the universe. Personally I can't wait to see what else Filoni and Favreau have cooked up in the kitchen. To the two masters, I say thank you.

.. and now we wonder ..

Where is Ezra Bridger?
