Coming Home (2014)
6/10
Can a stranger be a father?

The poetic action movies of Chinese director Yimou Zhang have made a fortune. Contrastingly. his dramas are made on small budgets, plaintive yet poignant. Consequently, I was curious to see how a bigger budget would affect a drama.

Made in 2014, 'Coming Home' had better production but thankfully remained a simple drama albeit with an early plot twist.

The Communists declare an educated man a dissident. After 10 years imprisonment, he escapes to visit his wife and daughter. But his teen daughter doesn't have loyalty to him, only to the Party, so she turns him in. By the time he's released, his wife has Alzheimer's, and doesn't recognise him. The daughter, as an adult, is burdened with guilt.

'Coming Home' isn't as memorable as Yimou's others but I am pleased to have watched it, and appreciative of the non-traditional ending.
